It was a concerted effort not to grip Ax’s arm as we stepped into the hotel. I felt like I’d taken ten shots of espresso, followed by three tequilas. Damn anxiety. I knew there’d be apprehension knowing that I could come face to face with the evil of my past, and present. But what I hadn’t expected was feeling fear. That raw, ripe, pungent blanket threatening to cripple every step. And let me tell you, that creepy-ass hotel did nothing to help matters.

I scanned the masks, some turning in my direction as Ax scribbled our names on the sign-in sheet and we crossed the expansive lobby.

What would I do if I saw him?

Ax’s concern that I’d go nuts wasn’t too far from the truth, but something told me that even if that was the case, if I did blow this ‘super-cool undercover sting op’ that I was in good company. Hell, I’d be safe in the zombie apocalypse with Ax at my side.

So, I took a deep breath and forced my shoulders to relax, my hand to dangle from Ax’s beefed up forearm, mirroring the women being escorted by their husbands… or their dads. Your guess was as good as mine on that one.

One thing was for sure, every hoity toity charity gala was the same, with the same stuffy people with their shiny cars and canned laughter. The only thing different with this party was the location. It was as if I’d stepped into a 1950’s horror movie. The hotel had obviously been renovated, but the owners had opted to keep the same dark, dated feel to the place, with antique furniture and fixtures throughout. This haunting ambiance was compounded by the amount of long stemmed candles that cast dark shadows across the walls resembling ghosts swaying back and forth. Mirroring the circle drive, more wickedly-grinning Jack-o-lanterns, ornate pumpkins, and fall foliage decorated the lobby.

Creepy, creepy, and creepy.

“Oh, dear Axel, what a pleasure to see you.” A heavily botoxed woman—impossible to tell her age—stepped over and extended her dainty, frail arm. A long string of pearls wrapped her wrists, matching the ones on her fingers. “I’m so sorry to hear about your brother, and of course your father.”

My gaze lifted to Ax, aware of his father’s passing but unaware of his brother’s.

“Thank you, Mrs. Bluestein.” A response as stoic as his stance. “This is Erika Zajac.”

“My, look at that tattoo.” Her eyes flickered to the rose on my wrist and she pulled her hand away. My lip tugged in amusement. They were all the same. Pity a young woman who’d marked herself up as if I must’ve been under some sort of new psychedelic drug, or held at gunpoint. I knew Mrs. Bluestein, a narrow-minded housewife whose idea of a good time was following her staff around her multi-million dollar mansion pointing out things they could “improve on.”

“Zajac… What an interesting last name you have…”

“It’s Polish.”

“Oh. Polish.” She gave me the once-over. Her brow tipped up. “And what do you do, Miss Zajac?”

“She’s my full-time girlfriend.
